This interesting article directly supports a previous article in the Rhino Club Newsletter about the vital importance of bees – those seemingly unimportant little insects that are so familiar to us that we tend to ignore them.
Even our busy little bees are under threat, however. In the Cape the threat of American foulbrood is looming, while in other parts of our country, and indeed worldwide, crop spraying with herbicides and insecticides is decimating the bee populations. Bees are such a vital link in life on this planet that a comment by an entomologist rings chillingly true – that if we lose our bees we lose our environment. And in the final analysis, our environment is all we have.
